Standard 3- Day Disaster Preparedness Kit
Purpose: This type of preparedness kit is for use when:
- You must leave home temporarily and have a destination planned a short distance away.
- There is a snowstorm, rainstorm, or other “normal” weather condition for your area occurs that can disrupt normal utilities and public services for a short period of time.
This list contains items that can be used for both stay at home or on the road. Some may pertain to Stay at home or on the road specifically. Use common sense. If you can’t use common sense, you probably won’t survive.
- 72 hours of food for each person in your house hold, non perishable, easy to make. Light weight preferred. (approx. 2000-2500 calories per person per day)
- 1 Gallon of water per person, per day (drinking and hygiene) (3 Days is 3 gallons per person)
- Flash light with extra batteries
- First Aid kit- (See First Aid Kit list coming in the future)
- Crank Radio- Ideally with a NOAA channel
- Multitool
- Reliable Knife (always have a reliable knife available)
- Extra Socks and underwear.
- Shoes/Boots, not flip flops or crocs
- Personal Documentation: Drivers license, Social Security Card, Marriage License, Birth Certificates, List of Emergency Contacts, ETC
- Cash, In small bills, broken up and kept in different locations: This will be different based on if you are home or on the road. You should have enough to be able to pay for fuel, place to stay, (keeping in mind some people may be price gouging) and other unexpected fees or charges.
- Secondary cooking source. I.E. Propane grill (Electric stove doesn’t work if the power is out)
- Lighter or matches
- Generator
- Secondary Heat Source, if its winter. IE Kerosene Heater (electric and natural gas services may be disrupted)
- Extra Fuel
- Prescription medications
- Book, playing cards, or something small but entertaining (something to kill the boredom and to take a mental break)
- Self Defense
- Cell phone with charger. Ideally with a back up power pack.
- Hygiene supplies (toothbrush w/ toothpaste, soap, towel etc)
- Jumper Cables
23. Can Opener- If you are choosing to eat canned goods, Make sure you have a can opener as well as a back up can opener.
This list is not all inclusive, some people may have different needs than others. I.E I will need a pair of prescription glasses since I wear contacts.
