Why Prepare?

What is preparedness? Simply put, it is being ready for something that interferes with your normal routine. Being prepared doesn’t mean being ready for the apocalypse, it could be something as simple as breaking down on your way to work. There are numerous reasons that being prepared can make your life easier and safer.

Many people think preparedness is having a bunker with solar generators and 5 years' worth of food. I mean, don’t get me wrong, that would be pretty sweet. Preparedness is really just having the ability to adapt to a situation. Having a jack and a spare tire in your car is simple preparedness. However, there are ways to take the next step in being prepared for other situations.

Around here the power can go out even on a calm day. Especially with the world revolving around electrical devices, a power outage can be quite an inconvenience. When the outage is extended you, risk losing perishable goods in the refrigerator and freezer. Your children may not be able to complete their homework. If you work from home, it may cause you to lose out on pay for that day or need to use a sick day.

These may be inconvenient concerns, but there is also the risk of natural disasters that can cause a massive disruption in your everyday life. Blizzards, floods and tornadoes can create periods of time where emergency services will be delayed. A simple trip to the grocery store may be prevented. Issues like this occur often enough that it is worth being prepared for.

FEMA recommends having three days' worth of provisions in case of any disaster. This includes food, water and medications. Depending on the climate or season you should have the ability to accommodate for the extreme hot or cold. You can check out the article on my website for a list of items you should have according to FEMA.

Preparedness is overall being ready for something that disrupts your life. This does not necessarily mean you need to buy all the expensive cool gizmos and gadgets. Preparedness is having the necessary, life sustaining items and items to mitigate small issues that could become big issues. Like having a spare tire or spare fuses in your car. Having a medical kit with you when you are cutting down trees or having a charging pack for your phone to call for help.

Obviously, there are many things that you could be prepared for. Storing the most important items such as food and water cover the most important concerns. Once the most important topics are covered, you can build out your preparedness plan and equipment. Just remember to have a preparedness mindset, not everything goes the way you plan.
